David Lasagna is not your typical comedic performer. The fifty-five year old musician/ media critic/social commentarian with the rhetorical skills of an absurdist lawyer from Planet Ragwaar, looks to give meaning and continuity through the almost cathartic act of stand-up performing.

Over the course of several performances and interviews both with him, his friends and others, this film follows the development of a late bloomer whose hysterical and sometimes neurotic onstage personas represent an endearing portrait of a man in search of answers in a troubling time. His code of "if you aren't confused then you don't know what is going on" becomes a rule of engagement both for himself and for his public. His shows are staged as his own "UNIVERSITY OF DAVE LECTURE SERIES" where he draws his audiences in with the guest lecturers of his own mind and spurs them to thoughtful hilarity and hopefully, to action.

The Film began as a part of The Woods Hole Film Festival's documentary workshop arm "wohodocushop'. The workshop's primary goal was to document Lasagna on the day of one of his performances and grew to encompass the overall growth of an artist trying to find his own idiosyncratic way through a highly revealing and challenging medium of comedy performance. LAYERS is shot entirely by the attendees of the workshop both during and after the Festival as they followed the performer's growth through different shows. Together with the Workshop leader, Kate Davis, more footage and interviews were assembled.

Directed by Jon Goldman, a multimedia artist and filmmaker the film is Executive Produced by Kate Davis, winner of the 2004 EMMY® for her documentary "Jockey" for HBO and "Southern Comfort" winner of the 2001 Sundance Film Festival (documentary category). Produced in association with Woods Hole Film Festival, Thought Balloon Pictures, and Q-Ball Productions. The Woods Hole Film Festival is an eight day showcase of independent film Saturday July 30th through saturday August 6, 2005
