A NEA-sponsored work, this was my second interactive inflatable sculpture designed and built with Andy Lipnick. As viewers passed the infra-red sensors in the skin of the inflatable. it woudl trigger a computer to sequence sounds from the Bela Lugosi classic, "Dracula". This was an early commentary on the vampiric quality of technology.

AIRWAVE ™

This is the first interactive inflatable sculpture I made and consisted of 15 large inflatable lozenges that, when pushed triggered tape-loops to make amplified, pre-recorded chiming sounds.

Presented at the Boston Center for the Arts 1986

This a prototype for an interactive work called
"airwave". As the viewer passes by the piece
immediately inflates and then rapidlydeflates.
In a fully realized version, this piece would
use close circuit bw tv to trigger the inflating
cones. Another prototype that exist ( no
photos yet) has a predetermined inflation
sequence, and has much smaller cones. It
looks like a series of purple "tongues" sticking
out and receding in very rapid succession. It
is pretty hysterical
